Boycott TD Canada Trust

Boycott Description

TD Canada Trust and the TD Bank group have been abusing their customers for too long. They target poor clients by waiting until their account balances are low, charging separate bank fees, and then charging NSF fees on each bank fee. For example, when Catharine Bell of Ontario Canada had $30 in her account, TD Bank moved $8 to her savings account and then attempted to take out 3 separate bank fees: $12, $8, and $10. There had been exactly enough money in her account to cover the fees BEFORE TD TOOK THE MONEY OUT AND CHARGED FEES ON IT. TD then charged a SEPARATE NSF CHARGE ON EACH BANK FEE. Ms. Bell believes that TD bank is targeting their customers racially, and also based on poverty. "No rich person would be forced to pay these charges. They are a poverty tax. It costs the bank nothing to bounce a payment.  And these fees aren't even legitimate. The bank charged them because they chose to move my money without consulting me in the first place". 

Amanda May of Ontario Canada had a similar issue with her student loan. A $13,000 student loan payment was misapplied by TD Canada Trust and put into another person's account. 

Michael Bell of Ontario Canada attempted to take $100 in $20 bills out of a TD Canada Trust Bank machine. The machine gave him 3 $20 bills, and two fives. When he went into the bank to ask them to replace the $5 bills with twenties, they refused and said "There's no way those machines gave out fives. We only put twenties in them." 

Jason D. of Ontario Canada had a student loan payment misapplied into his account. The amount of the loan was close to his pay, so he used it to pay bills. When his pay came in a second time, he was suspicious but TD Bank told him the payout was legitimate. A month and a half later, the police were at his door accusing him of theft and ordering him to pay the money he had "stolen" back to TD Canada trust. They misapplied someone else's student loan into his account, and then treated him like a criminal. 

Janice L, of Ontario Canada, was targeted due to a disability. While she was hospitalized for two weeks, TD Canada trust liquidated her bank account. She couldn't pay for her hospital room or the ambulance, and ended up in debt because all of her money had been taken out. TD Canada trust claimed that the federal government had taken the money out as part of the federal loan repayment program. The federal government had no record of having taken the money. Janice called the bank and explained that her physical disability made it impossible for her to get down to the branch to straighten things out. The head office (phone line) told her that she could ONLY solve the issue at the branch level.

Boycott Demands

1. TD Canada Trust contact us at [email protected] and make full restitution to those clients for whom it is still outstanding.

2. TD Canada Trust or the ombudsman circulate a survey to ALL of their clients asking if they have had issues with racial/disability and other constitutionally protected targeting, and act on any claims immediately. 

3. TD Canada Trust restructure their staff to remove any employees with repeated complaints against them. 

4. TD Canada Trust force all of their employees to give their name, employee number and call ID number to any client who calls. Employees will also not be allowed to hang up on clients who are recording calls to protect themselves.
