Hello everyone, my name is Mike Lewis and I would like you to help me with boycotting Lowe’s Home Improvement centers because of the discrimination my brother went through with Lowe’s that I personally witnessed at the store in Bowie Maryland, from the manager at that store.    Over six months ago I received over 300 emails from friends and family from all over the country telling me not to shop at Costco over the incident of the baby black doll that had a hat on calling it the “little monkey” and since that time, I and my family have closed our accounts with Costco.  In December of 2008 my brother went to use a friend’s credit card at Lowe’s that he had been using for years to buy items to help do handyman work and he was denied the use of the credit card but to make things worse the Manager of the Bowie Lowes store treated him in a very prejudice and discriminating way.  I happen to walk in the store a few minutes after my brother was humiliated and he explained what happened.  I gave my credit card to my Caucasian buddy, we will call him Mr. H, and he proceeded to buy a much pricier item with my credit card with nobody stopping HIM from making the purchase with someone else’s card.   I then proceeded to where the manager was and told him what happened and asked him why my brother was denied yet my friend was not.  The manager was rude and disrespectful and made prejudiced references to my brother “getting caught” as if my African American brother was doing something wrong, yet my white friend was not treated the same way.   I called him on what happened with my white friend, as in that nothing happened, he was not stopped and the manager just waved it away as if that was Ok.   Like I told the racist Lowe’s manager at the time, that it’s 2008 and it’s a shame we are still being treated this way and he proceeded to kick us out of the store, “his” store he said.  My brother’s lawyers filed a 10 million dollar law suit against Lowes over this incident in Federal court and after a long time frame a very small payment was made to him to shut him up.   At the deposition for my brothers case, I was asked if I had ever been arrested or been fired from a job, but they didn’t as Mr. H these questions.  I received a document from Loews wanting my brother’s wife and me to sign off on the suit case that my brother had against them, for us to agree that “Lowe’s expressly denies that it discriminated against Lewis” yet “Lowe’s acknowledges that its former store manager could have responded to the December 21, 2008 complaint made by Lewis” “more constructively”, yet Mr. H. who was also there and witnessed everything was not asked/told to sign off on the law suit.  I refused to sign the Lowe’s document and my brother’s wife also refused to sign because she wasn’t there and I was also just a witness in the suit case that my brother had with Loews.   Lowe’s does not want anyone to spread the news that they discriminate.  If Lowes did nothing wrong, it is amazing that a year later that no one involved with this discrimination case from Lowe’s, works at that store in Bowie anymore, how convenient.   Lowe’s has a history of discrimination and if you need more proof, you can Google “Lowe’s discrimination” and see the cases and issues that others have had with Lowe’s. 

I ask you to please support local “Mom and Pop” hardware stores or go to Home Depot and NOT to shop at Lowe’s because they treat minorities with bigotry and discrimination.  This is the year 2010 and we should not put up with discrimination, racism and bigotry from any company, any organization or anyone.  Also, please call, write or email Lowe’s Corporate Headquarters

and complain about the discrimination that their company practices and tell them that you will not stand for this type of behavior and that you will NOT shop at any of their stores till Lowe’s acknowledges the discrimination and bigotry issues, Lowe’s employees must all take diversity training sessions on how to treat minorities and that they donate Ten Million dollars to Bowie State University to go to minority students.

I was an employee and I witness Credit Card Fraud. I'm currently in litigating with them over the wrongful terminatiion and discriminatory acts I faced. The false witnesses and such are true as well. So based in the information I have which was validated by two firings of Store Manager and Department Manager the fraud was validated. However since the damaged to my personal and working life was so grand, they are trying to cover all the wrong doing. So I'm not surprised of other people facing such acts. If you are currently working, pay attention because based in the confession the department manager that invited me into the ring, they had a portafolio of fraudulent customers and it's very possible that fraudulent insurance claims and other criminal acts are being performed through out the corporation.

I shop Low's over Home Depot all the time.  I find Low's to be priced the same and help is never far away.

Have you ever thought your brother may be a thief? 

If your not happy with Low's..................go somewhere else.

I am so sick and tired of people calling racism when they don't get their way.  It is getting very old.  The issue here is that your brother was using a card that he was not an authorized user.  It doesn't matter if he did it before or not. Even if the employees at this store were rude, it certainly is not worth $10mil.  That is ridiculous.  You were not harmed, other than possibly being offended, but pull your big boy pants up and move on.  Life is full of hurts and disappointments, grow up!!

Before you fly off the handle and turn things into radical discrimination maybe you should read the plastic money agreements you signed. 

Authorized users and unauthorized users.  Regardless of the quanity of times said person used it the card holder could by law, refuse to pay because of the user agreement signed. 

Two wrongs do not make it right even if there were attitudes.  Grow UP! Stop blaming.  Be a responsible representation to all those that witness your childish behavior!

 Your complaint is ridiculous and little more than a money grab. Even if everything you stated was accurate, at the most, you have a brother that was doing something against good sound policy and was caught. It became a dislike issue when you wanted to make it a issue. What store manager would like you? regardless of your skin color. Your sense of entitlement and perception that the store manager is somehow obligated to accomadate you no matter what is telling. Lowes settled because it is good buisness to make problems like you go away. It does not have anything to do with the validity of your claim. Also, silly person, Is it your assumption that lowes built a 16 million dollar store, filled it with 20 million dollars of merchandise and then set out to discriminate and abuse customers because of their skin color? In Bowie, a community that is 64% black and in Prince Georges county, perhaps the most afro-centric and politically empowered government in the country.  You will probably be succesful selling your candy to the "poor me" crowd but I doubt most consumers in general , and black consumers in particular will bite on such a transparent effort. shame on ya.

If your brother was trying to use a credit card other than one issued him I don't blame Lowes for not honoring it.   If your brother wants to use a credit card in Lowes then let him apply for his own card.   That can be classified as fraud.    Playing the race card is getting pretty old.   I for one am very satisfied the Lowes service and products and will continue to shop there.

i am joining u in your campaign to boycutt lowes. I have also suffered the discriminationwith lowes.. If you step in the lowes in Smyrna Tennessee you won't find but white people working there. I am not african or mexican neither middle eastern. I am a human being.

My husband also buys material for his customers at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. If it had been him, he would have been a gentleman and said "No problem, I'll go get the customer (or friend, in your case) whom the card belongs to and bring them here for the purchase. He would have been reasonable and polite, and complied with their policy. You sound like someone who's looking for offences so you can sue the pants off a company. I'm sorry but YOUR HURT FEELINGS ARE NOT WORTH 10 MILLION DOLLARS! Here's a tissue, grow up, and quit embarrasing your race!

i work at lowes for the past 4 years, in a mixed race community in MA. Your blaming an entire company for an individuals view. the terminated these employees for the base purpose of they dont put up with that, they settled out of court (as 99% of companys now a days would) to avoid the false advertisement that lowes as a whole is a bigot based company. one individual does put a bad taste in your mouth but you cant put the accusation that the company embraces this behavior. especially on a company that is an equal oppertunity employer. Never mind the fundraising and events such as habitat for humanity that lowes is apart of.

I worked at a Lowe's in Texas for almost a year, and I loved it...

 

Untill 12/15/2011...I was terminated, they claimed that on the 29th of November I did something unsafe with the forklift that required immediate termination. Now, two days before this 'so-called' incident I had reported my Department Manager for using the "N" word to refer to a customer. I know they didn't fire me for 'driving faster than my spotter', they kept a guy working there after he parked a forklift on a guys foot. In fact, they only pulled his licence for the equipment for a couple weeks while the incident was 'under investigation'. Now, tell me, why did I not even get a warning? I had never gotten in trouble for anything before this. This is a VERY racist company. Even the store I worked at only had the minimum number of minorities employed there. One hispanic, one black, and 2 mixed. This company does not deserve to survive.

I must admit that, being a Lowe's employee for the past 6 years, there is a fair share of racism. However, being an equal oppertunity workplace, Lowe's has a corperate responsibility to be racist. I myself have been denied advancement for the very reason that I am a young, able bodied, white male. Every time I tried for a position, I was turned down. Despite my hard work and display of knowlege, jobs usually tended to go to older mexican or black employees. Not because of their work, but because of their color. Because of this, many of our locations suffer. Sure we has alot of diversity throughout the company, but what does that matter when a majority of them not only don't understand how their deparments work, but don't care either.

You discriminate in your speech, sir. If your friend is African American, capitalized, but the European American is just "white", uncapitalized, you yourself are prejudiced. As a mom of mixed offspring, I no longer buy into raising up one race, and dissing another, altho I used to be like you. How was the AA man dressed? how was the EA man dressed? Did you try this again in a mostly AA environment? I guarantee you, in a majority AA environment, the EA guy would have been dissed just as surely. Because it is not Lowe's, it is not "racist EA's"...it's simply people group together, and don't trust others, and don't treat others equally, by and large. So, let's get over it, boycott yourself and your  own prejudice. You're only human like everyone else. And Lowe's is only a human organization, and whichever group is in the majority, the other one will feel it, no matter where they shop, live, play, etc. It's just the way humans are.

I oppose anyone who discrimminates in hiring practices I am not personally aware of lowes doing this however they are in some kind of direct $600,000 fund drive with national park service who do and Im aware directly that they NPS violate citizens civil rights when it comes to age and hiring.

Hello,

I would like to thank you for your blog, and I saw the following add for a job opening with Lowe's.

I saw several job adds from recruiters who were looking to fulfill the opening for Lowe's (Opening located at the Headquarter in NC) with the following.

"American Born candidate only .......".

Nobody needs a security clearance to work for Lowe's. Lowe's is in the retail business and not in the defense business. I was very surprised to see "American Born candidate only ......." in the add.

Are they going to blame the recruiters for the add?, or recognize the troubling problem and fix it.

my husband works at a distibution center and is on a daily basis being told negative and sometimes false things to believe about the president, democrats, unions and so on. unfortunatly my husband is very easily pursuded to believe what he is told and comes home telling me things about how we have to stick with the VERY expensive insurance that covers next to nothing because if not then obama plans to make criminal charges for people that do not have insurance. he was only told this when i decided i want to cancel the insurance because we are paying way too much and they are covering less than 50% of our doctor visits and so on. he was told that they are allowed to get away with only giving them a 20 minute lunch for a 12 hour shift because they are not a union and only unions can be regulated by the government on those laws. this place is ridiculous with what they are telling these guys and something should be done about it.

Lots, of e-mails either describing their firing situation or people who want to oppose and call others names to make themself feel good.. All sad in different ways. But it's really the managers that make or break the store. Take it as an ex employee who just wanted to see other experiences on this site. I was fired because, as I can figure it out I refused to climb the corporate ladder while staying there so long and kept getting raises and vacation time. The two highest uppermanagement had decided for over nine months that I would be a possible fire. As I can figure it out there are a few others who have fallen before me for this very reason.  I wasn't even suprised when they handed me the reason for my final write up of three that allows them to fire you. Which of course was a half made up reason with what they believe is solid documentation. 

 I made sure to document on that write up, that I considered this the: final act of myself being targeted, the first being my first write up that year. The first in over nine years, for anything other than being 6-7 minutes late to many times.

so your upset that lowes fired the employees at fault?

are you mad that they would ask you to sign off possibly to avoid further litigation because you were the mans brother?

why would they ask an undiscriminated against, unrelated man to sign off?

this boycott is kinda stupid from what you described

you act like the entire corporation discriminated against you as opposed to the employees at that one store and you act as if mom and pop stores would never discriminate.

when will people realize that people are people and all a company can do is apologize and hope you sign a release from further litigation against them.

it sounds like they reacted properly i see no reason for this boycott.

I am a former employee of lowes and at this time i feel that i am being discriminated against. i was fired for something i allegedley did and had a witness that they didnt even speak to about the situation. after being fired i tried to return some floor vents i purchased there with a liftime warrinty that was braking and causing my kids to fall in the vents. i had to call corporate twice with in 2 wks and this was after i fought for unemployement and got approved. whie being in the store as a CUSTOMER, 2 managers, one being the store manager, treated my husband and i with disrespect and told us to leave over asking to return floor vents. finally the second call to corporate the corporate refund guy had to tell them they had to refund our money. after getting mad over that the stor manager decided to appeal the decision of me receiving my unemployment. i think its b/c within a cpl months i have had to call corporate and the district hr manager over this store. so to me it personal not professional

I signed your boycott list because I do not believe in discrimination of any type. (I am caucasion).

I also want to boycott Lowes for another discrimination case: they dropped their advertising on the Glenn Beck program because, as they state, he is a racist. This is a free speech issue being pushed by far-left groups who are supported financially by big union money. Mr. Beck is no more of a racist than any other news person I have heard on other programs. It is really about shutting up a voice that does not agree with far-left ideology. Lowes fell for their propaganda. Will you support me in my boycott of Lowes over discrimination?
